The Kurdistan Beekeepers Network says honey production in the Kurdistan Region reached 400 tons this year, falling short of domestic needs amid rising global demand for Kurdish honey.

Arif Sherwani, head of the network, said the region requires at least 525 tons annually to meet consumption needs. “

Because local production is insufficient, we are unable to export honey abroad, even though global demand is very high

Sherwani noted

He emphasized that the majority of honey produced in the Kurdistan Region is highland honey, made by bees kept in cool, elevated mountain areas. This type is known for its purity, floral diversity, and superior nutritional quality, placing it among the most sought-after varieties globally.

“Honey from our highland regions is considered one of the premium types in the world,” Sherwani said, adding that improving production capacity remains a priority to meet both local needs and international export potential.
