The Khor Mor gas field, which was attacked late last night, causing a complete gas production shutdown and widespread power outages, is one of the most important economic infrastructures and the backbone of the Kurdistan Region's electricity supply. It is also considered the largest gas field in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.

The field, which has been administered by the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) since 2003, is situated in Qadir Karam village within the Chamchamal district of Sulaymaniyah province.

Dana Gas and Crescent Petroleum Own 70% of Khor Mor

Based on available data from Dana Gas, a UAE-based company operating in the Khor Mor field, it is stated that 70% of the shares belong to Dana Gas and Crescent Petroleum. The site covers an area of 135 square kilometers.

The natural gas reserves are estimated to be approximately 17 trillion cubic feet.

Strategic Role in Kurdistan Region’s Energy Sector

The Khor Mor holds significant strategic importance for the energy infrastructure of the Kurdistan Region, as it supplies essential fuel for electricity generation and household use. 

Specifically, the gas is piped to the Chamchamal and Erbil power plants, contributing to approximately 67% of the region's electricity production, with a total capacity to generate up to 4,200 MW.

In addition, the field serves as the primary source of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) for household consumption, ensuring a reliable supply of energy for domestic needs across the region.

Following Attack, KRG Announces Limited Electricity Hours

However, following the Wednesday attack, the KRG Ministries of Natural Resources and Electricity announced that power was interrupted in certain areas of the region around 11:30 p.m. Consequently, electricity supply is expected to decrease from 24 hours to just 5 hours daily.
