The security situation in Lajan village has escalated, with security forces reportedly seeking to arrest individuals alleged to have participated in the demonstration in front of the Lanaz refinery. Authorities are also urging residents to evacuate the area through loudspeakers installed in local mosques.

Channel8 has learned that martial law was imposed in the area on Saturday, with security forces deploying heavy contingents surrounding the village.

The forces are also using police dogs to search residents, which has caused fear and anxiety among women and children in the village.

Residents Evacuate Amid Mounting Pressure

Multiple pieces of footage show residents evacuating their area amid mounting pressure. According to Channel8 reports, authorities plan to set up tents outside the village.

Protests Near Erbil’s Refineries Turn Violent

The developments in the area come amid protests by villagers near Erbil's refineries, which started on November 27.

However, tensions between protesters and security forces escalated on Saturday, resulting in one person killed and 12 wounded by security personnel.

Residents Call for Facility Closure and Job Opportunities

The resident appealed for the closure of the facilities or the creation of local employment opportunities, stating that promises of job creation have yet to be fulfilled.

Agreements and Detentions in Lajan

As a large number of forces deployed to the village last night, the Channel8 reporter said that the Harki tribe agreed with authorities to hand over their weapons in exchange for the release of individuals detained.

Although, so far, the authorities have issued arrest warrants for 30 villagers.

Human Rights Commission Condemn Violence and Call for Justice

The Independent Commission for Human Rights in the Kurdistan Region condemned the violence and shooting that took place during the protests and urged those responsible and the suspects involved to be immediately handed over to the court so they can face justice.

“The shooters and the suspects must be found soon and handed over to court,” the commission noted.
