Russian Strike on Zaporizhzhia Maternity Hospital Injures Six
A Russian airstrike hit a maternity hospital in the southern Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia on Sunday, injuring at least six people, according to regional governor Ivan Fedorov.
"Russians have struck a maternity hospital in Zaporizhzhia," Fedorov announced on Telegram, later updating the casualty count. "The number of victims has already increased to six people."
The attack marks the latest in a series of strikes on civilian infrastructure throughout the nearly three-year conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Attacks on medical facilities are prohibited under international humanitarian law, which affords hospitals special protection during armed conflict.
Zaporizhzhia, located in southeastern Ukraine, has been repeatedly targeted since Russia's full-scale invasion began in February 2022. The city lies relatively close to the front lines and has served as a refuge for civilians fleeing Russian-occupied territories in the region.
Details about the extent of damage to the facility and the conditions of those injured were not immediately available. It remains unclear whether patients, medical staff, or both were among the casualties.
The strike comes as Russia continues its sustained aerial campaign against Ukrainian cities, frequently targeting energy infrastructure and population centers. Ukraine has repeatedly accused Russia of deliberately attacking civilian targets, charges Moscow routinely denies.
International humanitarian organizations have documented numerous attacks on Ukrainian medical facilities throughout the war, with several incidents under investigation as potential war crimes.
