Qubad Talabani Highlights Urgent Need for New Government in Kurdistan Region
Qubad Talabani, Deputy Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region Government (KRG), met with Irfan Siddiq, the British Ambassador to Iraq, and emphasized that the "caretaker government" in the Kurdistan Region is unable to effectively address citizens' problems and is not suitable for this critical stage.
Today's meeting in Erbil was also attended by Andrew Bizley, the British Consul General in the Kurdistan Region. The parties discussed the formation of the next Iraqi government.
More than a year has elapsed since the sixth session of the 2024 parliamentary elections, held on October 20, 2024, and the new KRG cabinet has not yet been formed, due to disputes between the two major parties in Kurdistan, the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) and the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP).
Talabani Urges Iraqi Parties to Prioritize Stability
Talabani noted that Iraqi parties should consider the regional situation and the demands of Iraqi citizens in their efforts to form a government capable of maintaining stability.
He also urged the parties to take serious steps toward economic development and the improvement of services throughout Iraq.
Calls for a New Cabinet to Safeguard and Strengthen Kurdistan Region
Talabani explained the obstacles facing government formation to the British Ambassador and emphasized the need for a new cabinet to protect and strengthen the Kurdistan Region.
“This is a caretaker government that is not suited for this stage and cannot earn the trust of the Kurdish people, our friends in the region, or the world,” the Deputy Prime Minister stressed.
