Cancer Cases Rise in Erbil: Health Director Stresses Importance of Early Screening

Dr. Dlovan Mohammed, the General Director of Health in Erbil, announced that in 2025 the rate of cancer cases increased compared to 2024. He noted that during the past year, 4,238 new cancer cases were recorded within Erbil province.

Geographic Distribution of Patients

According to official statistics from Erbil’s health authorities, 77% of those diagnosed in 2025 were residents of Erbil city and its surroundings, while 23% came from outside the city seeking treatment in Erbil’s health centers.

Importance of Early Screening

The General Director emphasized the significance of early detection, stating that “many types of cancer, if identified in their initial stages, have a high chance of recovery.” He further stressed that “early screening leads to faster diagnosis and can be considered a final cure and salvation from the disease.”
