OpenAI is reportedly preparing to launch its first consumer hardware product, an AI-powered smart speaker featuring a built-in camera and facial recognition technology, according to a report by The Information.

The device, which could be priced between $200 and $300, is expected to be unveiled no earlier than February 2027, the report said, citing members of OpenAI’s device team. The product is said to be part of a broader hardware effort led by former Apple design chief Sir Jony Ive, who joined OpenAI last year.

Hardware Expansion

OpenAI has previously indicated that Ive’s first product collaboration with the company could be announced this year, though no official details have been released. The company has not publicly confirmed the reported specifications or timeline.

According to the report, the speaker would include facial recognition capabilities similar to Apple’s Face ID. Sources said the feature could be used for user identification and potentially for purchases, though exact functionality remains unclear.

Additional Devices Reportedly in Development

The report also said OpenAI is developing additional AI hardware, including smart glasses and a smart lamp. The glasses are reportedly not expected to reach mass production until at least 2028. No timeline was provided for other rumored devices such as smart earbuds.

Strategic Context

OpenAI’s move into consumer hardware comes as competition intensifies in AI-powered devices and smart home technology. Industry rivals, including Apple and Amazon, have also been linked to new AI hardware initiatives.

The reported smart speaker would aim to use AI to observe user behavior and provide recommendations intended to support daily routines, according to sources cited in the report.
OpenAI has not commented publicly on the device details or release schedule.
