French President Emmanuel Macron said Saturday that the recent US Supreme Court ruling limiting President Donald Trump’s tariff powers highlighted the importance of institutional checks and balances in democracies.

Speaking at the annual agricultural fair in Paris, Macron said the decision demonstrated the value of legal oversight and independent institutions. “It is not bad to have a Supreme Court and the rule of law,” he said, adding that democracies function best when power is balanced by counterweights.

Macron also addressed Washington’s newly announced 10 percent global tariff, saying France would assess its economic impact while continuing to support exports. He stressed that French producers would remain active in international markets despite the new US trade measures.

The remarks come after the US Supreme Court ruled that a 1977 emergency powers law does not authorize the president to impose broad tariffs, a decision that reshaped the legal debate around Trump’s trade policy and prompted new tariff measures from the White House.
