The International Olympic Committee said Saturday that FIFA’s support for a sports investment program in Gaza is consistent with the responsibilities of international sporting bodies, following criticism and questions over FIFA President Gianni Infantino’s participation in a high-profile political meeting in Washington.

IOC President Kirsty Coventry said Friday she had not been aware that Infantino attended the inaugural meeting of the Board of Peace alongside US President Donald Trump. The meeting drew attention after Infantino announced a major football reconstruction initiative for Gaza.

According to AFP, FIFA plans to spearhead a $75 million fund aimed at rebuilding football infrastructure damaged during the war between Israel and Hamas. The initiative includes proposals for sporting facilities, education programs and elite athlete development.

IOC Backs Sports-Based Development Role

In a statement to AFP, an IOC spokesperson said the organization had been in contact with FIFA and understood that the football body was supporting a “comprehensive sport recovery investment program in Gaza, Palestine.”

The spokesperson added that such involvement is “entirely in keeping with the role of an International Sport Federation,” noting that the IOC itself continues to support sports development in the region through Olympic Solidarity, its development arm.

Infantino’s Appearance Draws Attention

Infantino appeared at the Washington event wearing a red cap marked “USA” and the numbers 45-47, referencing Trump’s two non-consecutive presidential terms. The FIFA chief, who is also an IOC member, has appeared publicly with Trump on several occasions.

The United States is set to co-host the upcoming FIFA World Cup alongside Mexico and Canada. In December, FIFA awarded Trump its inaugural peace prize, with Infantino describing the US president’s actions as promoting peace and unity.

Broader Context

The announcement comes as international sports organizations face increasing scrutiny over their role in conflict zones and political settings. FIFA’s Gaza initiative positions football as a tool for recovery, while the IOC’s response underscores its view that sport development programs can play a constructive humanitarian role.
