The Political Bureau of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) convened on Tuesday, in a meeting attended by PUK President Bafel Jalal Talabani, where members reviewed regional developments, security tensions and recent diplomatic engagements, according to an official statement.

During the session, Talabani briefed the bureau on his recent meetings with Tom Barrack, U.S. President Donald Trump’s special envoy, and Syrian Democratic Forces commander Mazloum Abdi. The discussions, according to the statement, focused on the need to guarantee a constitutional framework in Syria that protects the rights of all components and on implementing the January 29 agreement between Syria and the Syrian Democratic Forces.

The bureau also addressed ongoing regional conflict and security tensions. The PUK reiterated its position that a return to negotiations and dialogue remains the most viable path forward. The statement said the party’s priority is safeguarding the lives and property of citizens in the Kurdistan Region while protecting Iraq’s sovereignty.

Talabani said the PUK is prepared to mobilize what it described as its “extensive and effective relations” to support peace, stability and development in Iraq and the broader region.

Trump Conversation Highlighted

A key topic of discussion during the meeting was the substance of a recent phone conversation between U.S. President Donald Trump and PUK President Bafel Jalal Talabani, according to the statement. It said President Trump outlined America’s objectives regarding the ongoing war and expressed appreciation for the PUK’s role in Iraq.

Talabani told the bureau that the call provided an opportunity to better understand U.S. objectives and to discuss strengthening cooperation and building a robust partnership between the United States and Iraq.
