KDP President Barzani Denounces ‘completely unjustifiable’ Attacks on Peshmerga

Masoud Barzani, President of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), denounced the “completely unjustifiable” attacks on Peshmerga bases in the Soran independent administration, Erbil, stressing that these actions were carried out without regard for the principles of neighborliness and international law

“I strongly condemn the attack this morning on the positions of the Kurdistan Peshmerga forces with Iranian missiles,” Barzani said in a statement on Tuesday, adding, “Sadly, as a result, a number of heroic Peshmerga were martyred and others were wounded.”

He offered condolences to the families of the martyrs and wished a speedy recovery for the wounded.

Unjustified Attack on Kurdistan Region

“This is a hostile attack and is completely unjustifiable. This is the latest in a series of such attacks against the Kurdistan Region, carried out in disregard for the principles of neighborliness and international law,” he added.

Barzani Affirms Peshmerga's Role 

The KDP president reiterated that the assault comes as “the Kurdistan Region has not been a party to the current conflict in the region and has never threatened its neighbors.”

“The Peshmerga are our nation's most beloved and precious asset," he noted.

Targeting Kurdistan Region and Escalating Regional Attacks

Six Iranian ballistic missiles targeted military positions in the Soran Independent Administration early today, resulting in the martyrdom of six Peshmerga fighters and wounding many others. 

Since late February and the military operations involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, the Kurdistan Region has experienced more than 300 attacks, which have impacted civilian and economic infrastructures.

Kurdish Leadership Reaffirms Neutrality, Condemns Attacks

Since the beginning of the conflict, the Kurdish leadership underlined their neutrality and reaffirmed that the Kurdistan Region will not be a participant in the conflict, nor will its territory be used against any other countries. They also called on all parties to cease hostilities and return to dialogue.

The Kurdistan Region leaders and officials strongly condemned today's attacks, characterizing them as contradicting the principles of good neighborliness. They also called on Baghdad and the international community to take necessary action to prevent those assaults. 

Iraqi Presidency Condemns Attacks on Peshmerga, Praises Their Role 

Meanwhile, the Iraqi Presidency expressed “its strong condemnation of the shelling that targeted the Peshmerga forces,” highlighting that the Peshmerga “have played an effective and honorable role in confronting terrorism and in reinforcing security and stability across the country."
