Kurdistan Region President Congratulates Iraq's National Team on Historic World Cup Berth for 2026

Nechirvan Barzani, President of the Kurdistan Region, extended congratulations to the Iraqi national team for its historic qualification for the 2026 World Cup, hoping the achievement brings “further harmony and joy for everyone.”

“I extend my warmest congratulations to all the people of Iraq, the sports community, and the players of the national team,” Barzani said in a congratulatory statement on Wednesday.

Iraq qualifies for 2026 World Cup after 40 years

Iraq qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Tuesday, ending a 40-year absence with a 2-1 victory over Bolivia in the intercontinental playoff final at Estadio BBVA in Monterrey. 

The team's success was fueled by key performances from Kurdish players, including Marko Farji’s match-winning assist and the resilient defensive efforts of Rebin Sulaka and Merchas Doski.

Barzani Praises Team’s Dedication and National Pride

Barzani noted that the “historic achievement" is “joyful news and a source of pride for all Iraqis.”

He praised each team member whose dedication and effort transformed the dream of qualifying for the World Cup into a tangible achievement.

Hopes for Continued Victory and Unity in the Group Stage

“I wish the Iraqi national team continued success in the group stage matches of the World Cup, and I hope this victory serves as a foundation for further harmony and joy for everyone," he added.
