Bafel Jalal Talabani, President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), welcomed the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and recent diplomatic steps aimed at easing regional tensions.

In a statement, Talabani said the announcement by U.S. President Donald Trump and Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi to reopen the strategic waterway, alongside a ceasefire in Lebanon, marked a positive development.

“This development represents an important step toward de-escalation at a critical moment for the region,” he said.

Economic and Security Implications Highlighted

Talabani said reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a key global energy corridor, could help restore confidence in international markets while contributing to regional stability.

“The reopening of this vital waterway not only restores confidence in global energy markets but also contributes directly to regional stability and economic recovery,” he said.

The strait, through which a significant share of the world’s oil supply passes, has been at the center of recent tensions, with threats to shipping raising concerns over global energy security.

Push for Sustained Diplomatic Efforts

Talabani urged regional and international actors to build on recent progress and move toward more durable agreements.

“We encourage all parties to continue on this path, to build on this momentum, and to transform temporary understandings into lasting agreements,” he said.

The comments come amid a fragile ceasefire and ongoing diplomatic efforts to ease tensions following weeks of heightened confrontation across the Middle East.
