Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday condemned an incident in which an Israeli soldier damaged a statue of Jesus in southern Lebanon, saying the act contradicts Israel’s values and will be investigated.

In a statement posted on X, Netanyahu said he was “stunned and saddened” and condemned the act “in the strongest terms.”

Investigation and Disciplinary Action

He said military authorities had opened a criminal probe and would take “appropriately harsh disciplinary action” against those responsible.

Images circulating on social media appear to show a soldier striking a statue of a crucified Jesus with a sledgehammer. The footage could not be independently verified.

Apology and Religious Context

Netanyahu said Israel “cherishes and upholds” values of tolerance and respect among religions, adding that the country views members of all faiths as equals.

He also expressed regret over the incident, saying Israel apologizes “for any hurt this has caused to believers in Lebanon and around the world.”

Foreign Minister and Military Response

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar described the act as “grave and disgraceful,” saying it was “completely contrary to our values.”

Israel’s military said it viewed the incident with “great severity,” adding that the soldier’s conduct was inconsistent with the standards expected of its troops.

Ongoing Tensions

The incident comes amid continued tensions along Israel’s northern front, where developments in southern Lebanon remain under scrutiny.
