Months after their disappearance, the fate of a group of Kurdish migrants in Libya and the Mediterranean Sea remains unclear, leading to calls for the formation of a parliamentary committee to investigate the case.

Status of the Missing Migrants

Peshraw Abdullah, representative of the Association of Returned Refugees from Europe, stated that the fate of more than 30 Kurdish migrants has been unknown since March of this year. It is believed that the migrants may have died in two separate incidents on March 14 and 21 while attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea.

Call for an Investigative Committee

Abdullah has called on the Iraqi Council of Representatives to establish a special committee to investigate and clarify the fate of the migrants. The request seeks information about individuals who departed Libya for Europe and have since lost contact.

Dangers of the Libya Route

According to the Association of Returned Refugees from Europe, around 70 Kurdish migrants are currently in Libya intending to reach Italy via the Central Mediterranean route. This route is considered one of the most dangerous, with estimates indicating that approximately 50 migrants lose their lives on it each day.

Mediterranean Casualty Figures

According to official statistics, an estimated 2,185 migrants died while attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea in 2025. By March 2026, at least 658 deaths had been recorded, although the actual number remains uncertain. The total toll is difficult to determine, as many victims are never recovered; for example, between 2014 and 2018, around 12,000 people who drowned were never found.
