Magdalena Andersson, Leader of the Swedish Social Democratic Party and former Prime Minister of Sweden, has sent a formal letter of congratulations to Bafel Jalal Talabani, President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), following the election of Nizar Amedi as President of the Republic of Iraq.

In the letter, Andersson acknowledged the difficult circumstances surrounding the new presidency, noting that the broader region is "marked by instability and uncertainty, with conflicts and open wars casting long shadows over the future."

Call for Unity and Stability

She described Iraq as facing a dual challenge of external pressures and internal tensions, warning that public debate too often follows sectarian lines that risk deepening divisions rather than bridging them.
Against that backdrop, Andersson called on the PUK to step up as a constructive political force.

"The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan has an important role to play as a unifying force for social cohesion, democracy and justice," she wrote, adding that President Amedi has been entrusted with a clear mandate to take on precisely these challenges.

Support for New President

The Swedish party leader expressed hope that Amedi's election would foster cooperation across Iraq's political forces and strengthen the country's standing in the region and the wider international community. "We wish the new President every success in fulfilling this important responsibility, in the service of the people and the country's future," she concluded.

The message reflects growing international attention on Iraq's political transition and the role Kurdish political parties may play in shaping a more stable and unified government.
