Barzani Rejects 'Erroneous Interpretations,' Says Peshmerga Weapons Symbolize Sacrifice and Dignity
Masoud Barzani, President of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), stated that the Peshmerga's arsenal represents a history of sacrifice and dignity rather than mere tools of warfare in response to “erroneous interpretations” regarding the matter.
Barzani’s statement on Wednesday comes as the federal government in Baghdad pushes to bring all armed groups and paramilitaries strictly under centralized state control.
Some political factions in Baghdad argued that the Peshmerga should face similar restrictions under the state-control framework.
Unlike informal groups, the Peshmerga forces are explicitly recognized under Article 121 of the Iraqi Constitution as the legitimate, official regional defense guard of the Kurdistan Region.
Barzani Slams “Erroneous Interpretations” of Peshmerga Weaponry
“Recently, due to the unique political circumstances that have arisen, certain parties have begun discussing the weaponry of the Peshmerga, offering erroneous interpretations and incorrect viewpoints,” Barzani noted.
He stressed that “everyone must remember that the Peshmerga was born out of the blood, toil, and tears of the people of Kurdistan.”
Peshmerga Arsenal Symbolizes Kurdish Dignity and Sacrifice
The KDP President emphasized that the Peshmerga's weapon “is not merely a piece of iron, an arsenal, or a tool for warfare. The weapon of the Peshmerga represents history, sacrifice, dignity, and deep-seated conviction.”
He further highlighted that it “symbolizes the devotion and commitment that they hold at all times for their people, their land, and their homeland.”
