The Iraqi Joint Operations Command has emphasized the continuation of military coordination with the Peshmerga forces, noting that internal matters and the reorganizing of those forces fall exclusively under the authority of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).

Peshmerga Restructuring Falls Under KRG Authority

Qais al-Muhammadawi, Deputy Commander of the Iraqi Joint Operations Command, responded to questions from journalists regarding whether the reorganizing process affecting armed forces and groups would also include the Peshmerga.

He stated that the reorganization of Peshmerga units and forces is an issue directly related to the KRG, which alone is responsible for making decisions on the matter.

Continued Coordination and Representation

Al-Muhammadawi stressed that coordination with the Peshmerga continues at a very high level.

He also noted that the Peshmerga maintains official representation in all military committees, the Joint Operations Command, and the Iraqi National Security Council, reflecting the close and robust relationship between the two sides.

Joint Operations Against ISIS

He revealed that the past two to three years have witnessed the highest level of cooperation between the Iraqi Army and the Peshmerga.

As a key example, he highlighted the formation of two joint brigades tasked with pursuing and eliminating ISIS remnants and sleeper cells in critical areas, describing the initiative as the most successful coordination effort between the two forces.

Government Vision for Armed Groups

The Deputy Commander expressed hope that all armed groups would act in a national spirit and comply with integration initiatives in line with the vision of the new government and the directives of the Supreme Religious Authority.

He emphasized that the current phase requires all factions to come under the direct authority of the Commander-in-Chief of the Iraqi Armed Forces to preserve the country's stability.
