Journalist Lanaz Kurdo, the daughter of the late poet Kurdo Abdullah, widely known as "Kurdo the Poet," has passed away following a severe traffic accident in Sulaymaniyah.

Her death comes less than 24 hours after journalist Halkawt Aziz was killed in a separate road accident, marking two tragic losses for the media community in a single day.

Lanaz Kurdo Killed in Early-Morning Traffic Accident

A serious traffic accident claimed the life of journalist Lanaz Kurdo early Monday morning on Malik Mahmoud Ring Road in Sulaymaniyah.

According to traffic authorities, the crash occurred between 5:00 a.m. and 5:15 a.m. beneath the Dabashan Bridge when a Mitsubishi Lancer went out of control, overturned, and violently collided with one of the bridge’s concrete support pillars.

The force of the collision caused catastrophic damage to the vehicle, and the 22-year-old driver died instantly at the scene.

Victim Identified as Journalist and Daughter of Kurdo the Poet

Following legal and forensic procedures, authorities officially identified the victim as Lanaz Kurdo, a journalist and the daughter of the late poet Kurdo Abdullah, who was popularly known as "Kurdo the Poet."

Lanaz Kurdo had worked in the media sector and built her professional career through a number of local news and press organizations.

Her identity was confirmed after the completion of forensic examinations, corresponding to an earlier statement issued by the Sulaymaniyah Traffic Directorate, which had initially reported the death of an unidentified female driver.

Investigation Into the Cause of the Crash Continues

Bahman Ahmad, Director of Sulaymaniyah Inner-City Traffic Police, stated that preliminary findings indicate the vehicle first struck the road median before crashing into the bridge pillar.

He said the driver lost control of the car, resulting in the fatal collision.

According to Ahmad, the investigation remains ongoing, with authorities examining the vehicle’s speed and other technical factors. The autopsy report will also be attached to the legal case file to help determine the definitive circumstances surrounding the accident.

Two Journalists Lost in Road Accidents Within One Day

Lanaz Kurdo's death marks the second loss of a journalist in the Kurdistan Region within less than 24 hours.

On Sunday, journalist Halkawt Aziz lost his life in a traffic accident on the Baghdad-Basra highway. Less than a day later, Lanaz Kurdo was killed in Sulaymaniyah after her vehicle overturned and crashed beneath the Dabashan Bridge.

The back-to-back tragedies have left the media community mourning the loss of two journalists in a single day.
