Channel8 Exclusive: Erbil and Baghdad to Establish Permanent High-Level Coordination Committee
The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and the federal government are moving toward a new phase in their relationship, with plans to establish a permanent high-level body to address longstanding disputes and strengthen coordination between both sides.
Formation of the Permanent High Ministerial Committee for Coordination
Erbil and Baghdad have agreed to establish a high-level body dedicated to coordination between the two governments.
Officially named the Permanent High Ministerial Committee for Coordination, the body will be tasked with closely following up on all unresolved issues and files that have remained pending between the federal government and the Kurdistan Region for years.
Its objective is to find practical solutions to outstanding disputes and prevent new tensions from affecting bilateral relations.
Joint Oversight of Agreements and Decisions
The KRG is expected to form a committee of ministers and senior officials to work alongside their counterparts in the Iraqi government as a unified framework for negotiations and dialogue.
The committee’s primary responsibility will be to monitor the implementation of agreements, procedures, and joint decisions across various sectors.
Intensive discussions regarding the selection of committee members and the framework of its operations are expected to take place during Wednesday’s session of the Kurdistan Region Council of Ministers.
Expectations for Resolving Outstanding Disputes
Following the formation of the new Iraqi cabinet, there is growing optimism that relations between Erbil and Baghdad will move toward greater stability and more fundamental solutions.
Observers believe that if both governments adhere to the terms of their agreements, the new committee could become an important mechanism for resolving complex financial and oil-related disputes.
Meanwhile, Kurdish representatives in Baghdad stress that the KRG must fulfill its obligations to ensure the federal government can continue guaranteeing public sector salary payments.
