Iraq to Formalize Peshmerga Defense Status and Regulate Weapons Control
Spokesperson for Iraq's Commander-in-Chief asserts strengthening of state sovereignty, announces work to solidify Peshmerga's constitutional status as an integral part of the defense system.
Sabah al-Numan, spokesperson for the Commander-in-Chief of the Iraqi Armed Forces, stated that reigning in proliferation of unauthorized weapons has become a matter of critical urgency. "No armed factions or operations outside the umbrella of the law and the state will be tolerated," al-Numan emphasized.
Dissolving Political Factions
In a decisive move to enforce state authority, Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi has ordered the formation of a High Central Committee. The committee is tasked with reclaiming weapons, ammunition, and military hardware from groups operating outside official state frameworks.
According to al-Numan, the committee’s mandate also includes severing any political affiliations within armed factions while simultaneously safeguarding the financial rights and salaries of personnel through official state channels.
Integration of the Peshmerga
Addressing the status of the Kurdistan Region’s forces, al-Numan affirmed Baghdad's commitment to solidifying the constitutional status of the Peshmerga.
"The government is actively working to cement the Peshmerga's position as an inseparable pillar of Iraq's national defense architecture and political process," al-Numan said.
He added that the federal government remains fully committed to providing welfare and support to the families of fallen and wounded Peshmerga fighters.
Transition of Coalition Forces and Urban Demilitarization
These sweeping domestic security reforms coincide with the scheduled conclusion of the international coalition's military mission late this September. The coalition's presence is slated to transition into a series of localized bilateral security partnerships.
As foreign troops shift roles, al-Numan identified the demilitarization of urban areas as Baghdad’s primary domestic challenge. The government plans to completely remove unauthorized armed elements from city centers and officially transfer municipal security portfolios to the Ministry of Interior.
Regional Stability and Non-Interference
On regional foreign policy, the military spokesperson reiterated Iraq's firm stance against cross-border aggression, vowing that Iraqi territory would not be utilized as a staging ground or launchpad for attacks against neighboring states. Concurrently, al-Numan warned that Baghdad would decisively block any foreign interference in Iraq's internal affairs or threats to its national security.
