Environment Minister: Media Is a Key Partner in Strengthening Oversight and Environmental Awareness
Iraqi Minister of Environment Srwa Abdul Wahid has stressed the importance of closer cooperation with media institutions, describing the media as a fundamental partner in promoting environmental awareness, supporting sustainable development, and conveying citizens’ concerns.
Dialogue Session on Media and the Environment
Her remarks came during a dialogue session titled “Media: A Partner of the Environment,” organized by the Environmental Awareness and Media Department.
The session brought together television channel directors and representatives of various media institutions to discuss ways of improving environmental media coverage and strengthening cooperation between relevant actors.
Media’s Role in Public Awareness and Accountability
The Minister highlighted the essential role of the media in shaping public opinion and raising awareness of environmental challenges.
She noted that the government considers citizens key partners in reform through transparency and effective communication.
Focus on Environmental Journalism and Green Economy
The session addressed the development of environmental, regulatory, and investigative journalism. It also explored ways to enhance public understanding of the green economy, clean energy, and carbon markets, alongside proposals to launch training programs for media professionals in these fields.
Recommendations for Future Cooperation
The discussion concluded with a set of recommendations, most notably the need to strengthen cooperation between the Ministry of Environment and media institutions.
The aim, according to participants, is to support sustainable development goals and reinforce environmental protection efforts across Iraq.
