In an interview with Channel8, former Turkish Prime Minister Ahmed Davutoglu highlighted Turkey’s strong interest in the security and stability of the Kurdistan Region, underlining shared priorities in peace, development, investment, and regional cooperation.

Security of Kurdistan Region Is a Priority

Ahmed Davutoglu stated that the security and safety of Erbil, Sulaymaniyah, Duhok, and Zakho have always been of great importance to Turkey.

He emphasized that the absence of threats in the Kurdistan Region, along with the establishment of prosperity and peace, is as crucial to Turkey as its own security.

Political Background and Personal Relations

Davutoglu, one of the co-founders of the Justice and Development Party (AK Party), previously served as party chairman and held the positions of Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Turkey.

He also spoke about his friendship with Jalal Talabani, noting that Talabani played a major role in resolving crises.

Sulaymaniyah Development and Investment Outlook

Regarding the future of Sulaymaniyah, Davutoglu remarked, "Based on what I have heard from Qubad Talabani and Bafel Jalal Talabani regarding development, Turkey will play a major role in investing in Sulaymaniyah. We must all grow together.”

Human Rights and Political Freedoms

Commenting on Selahattin Demirtas, former co-chair of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP), Davutoglu stated, "Selahattin Demirtas should be released within the framework of the rulings of the European Court of Human Rights. Neither Demirtas nor any other politician should be in prison, because their rightful place is in the political arena, not jail.”

Kurdish Rights and Regional Coexistence

Davutoglu also addressed Kurdish rights, saying, “I have always said that I am Turkmen, and defending the rights of Kurds is my duty. As a Sunni, defending the rights of Shias and Alevis is my duty. This is precisely why Kurds in Turkey call me ‘Sarok Ahmed’ (Leader Ahmed).”

Vision for Regional Peace

Concluding his interview, Ahmed Davutoglu stated, "I want to leave behind a legacy where I can say, 'I forged peace among Kurds, Turks, Arabs, and Persians.'"
