Top officials from the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) stated on Thursday that dialogue with other parties is ongoing to resolve the political stalemate in the Kurdistan Region, urging the return of lawmakers to parliament.

Briefing reporters on government formation talks, KDP spokesperson Mahmoud Mohammed stated that the party conducted numerous visits to political factions following the Eid holiday, acting on the directive of KDP President Masoud Barzani.

“The purpose of these visits is to pave the way to end the current political stagnation,” he added.

Mohammed confirmed that the KDP has established contact with other political groups, noting that these communications remain ongoing.

The Kurdistan Islamic Union (KIU) launched the initiative in mid-May by presenting it to Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) President Bafel Talabani in Sulaymaniyah, before subsequently visiting the KDP, with both parties welcoming the proposal.

The KDP spokesperson stated that the party welcomed and commended the Kurdistan Islamic Union's support, adding that they had visited the KIU leadership to formally express their endorsement.

“The Kurdish people must strive for unity because the region is undergoing massive events and major transformations; we must be fully prepared to parallel these changes and withstand the challenges,” he stressed.

KDP Urges Parties to Return Lawmakers to Parliament

KDP Political Bureau member and former parliament Speaker Kamal Karkuki stated today that the people of Kurdistan have fulfilled their duty, urging political parties to allow their lawmakers to return to parliament to fulfill their duties.

“As the KDP, we have been ready from the very beginning, and all our members of parliament are prepared to resume the political process,” he noted.

Regarding the call made by Masoud Barzani, he highlighted that the KDP has a special committee visiting various political parties, expressing hope that the outreach will yield positive results.

PUK’s Rasul: Disputes Go Beyond Posts, Lines of Communication Active

Meanwhile, PUK Political Bureau member Darbaz Kosrat Rasul affirmed that lines of communication remain active, noting that the party continues to maintain constructive relations with all political factions.

Rasul said that the disputes with the KDP “go beyond posts,” adding that, “If it were only about posts, it would have been easier to reach an agreement.”
