“Where Is Beauty?” Exhibition Revives the Legacy of Missing Photographer Kamaran Najm

Ten years after his disappearance, photographer Kamaran Najm is being honored through a dedicated exhibition and a mini-museum. The photographer who once searched for “beauty” in the heart of war now has his life story and work preserved in a new book titled “Where Is The Beauty?”

“Where Is The Beauty?” Exhibition and the Revival of His Vision

A selection of Kamaran Najm’s most powerful works was presented in a special exhibition titled “Where Is The Beauty?”

As a conflict photographer, Kamaran used his camera as a shield to document raw realities. Although he was wounded and went missing in June 2014, the exhibition shows that his vision remains alive, with hope-filled images that continue to endure.

A Lens Focused on Hope Amid Destruction

Kamaran’s photography went beyond documenting war; it sought signs of life and humanity amid devastation.

Across Iraq and Kurdistan, his lens consistently focused on hope within conflict rather than destruction itself. His brother, Ahmed Najm, noted that Kamaran always tried to find light within suffering.

Book Launch: Preserving a Painful Yet Meaningful History

Alongside the exhibition, the book “Where Is The Beauty?” was launched as a written record of both pain and hope.

It recounts his working journey, the moment he was wounded, and his disappearance, through the testimony of those close to him. Translator Halo Fariq said the book ensures future generations understand the depth of his commitment to photography.

Metrography Mini-Museum: Silent Testimonies of His Work

Within the Metrography Agency, a small museum has been established to display Kamaran Najm’s personal belongings.

His equipment and personal items are not merely objects but silent witnesses to a difficult era and his unwavering dedication to journalism, a profession for which he ultimately paid the highest price. Media law expert Saman Fawzi emphasized the importance of preserving his professional legacy.

An Absence That Still Speaks Through His Images

Although Kamaran’s body was lost in the dust of an unwanted war, his enduring question, “Where is the beauty?” continues to be answered through his photographs.

He may be gone, but through this exhibition, museum, and book, his vision and perspective continue to live on.
