A high-ranking military delegation from Baghdad met with Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani in Erbil to provide security guarantees for foreign oil companies and help facilitate the resumption of oil exports.

Visit of the Iraqi Chief of Staff to Erbil

An Iraqi military delegation led by General Abdul Amir Yarallah, Chief of Staff of the Iraqi Army, arrived in Erbil.

The delegation met with Nechirvan Barzani, President of the Kurdistan Region, as well as senior officials from the Ministry of Peshmerga. According to the Iraqi Ministry of Defense, the meeting covered several key shared military and security issues between Erbil and Baghdad.

Oil Field Protection Mechanism Under Discussion

According to Channel8 sources, the main focus of General Yarallah’s visit is establishing a mechanism to secure the Kurdistan Region’s oil fields.

This follows a recent meeting between a regional delegation and Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi, during which it was previously proposed that the Iraqi Army assume responsibility for protecting the fields, a proposal that was rejected by the Kurdistan Region at the time.

Security Guarantees Demanded by Foreign Companies

Following recent U.S. and Israeli strikes against Iran and renewed attacks by armed groups targeting the Kurdistan Region, foreign oil companies have suspended oil production.

These companies are now requesting strong and credible security guarantees before resuming operations to restart oil production and exports from the Kurdistan Region.
