Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) President Bafel Jalal Talabani extended congratulations to the United States and Iran following the announcement of a “historic agreement” between the two nations, framing the accord as a pivotal milestone for Middle Eastern stability.

Washington and Tehran have agreed to an interim peace deal framework, mediated by Pakistan and Qatar, to immediately halt their military operations after over 100 days of active conflict.

Announcing the breakthrough, U.S. President Donald Trump and Iranian officials confirmed that the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will be formally signed on Friday in Switzerland.

‘A Positive Step’: Talabani Applauds Peace Agreement

“We congratulate the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran on this historic agreement,” Talabani said in a statement on Monday, expressing hope that the deal “will lead to lasting peace in the region.”

Talabani described the initiated peace as “a positive step toward reducing tensions and promoting stability in our region.”

Talabani emphasized his party's enduring commitment to regional diplomacy, stating that the PUK has consistently championed all initiatives aimed at fostering peace, dialogue, and mutual cooperation.

“God bless Iran. God bless the United States,” he concluded his statement.

Talabani’s Neutrality Strategy in the U.S.-Iran Conflict

Since the outbreak of hostilities on February 28, the PUK President has maintained neutrality, vowing that the Kurds would not serve as the "tip of the spear" in the regional conflict.

Throughout the crisis, Talabani maintained open communications with Washington and Tehran, using international platforms to advocate for Kurdistan to act as a "diplomatic bridge rather than a battlefield."

To protect local stability from wartime collateral damage, he urged political rivals to remain united and worked behind the scenes to encourage a "less bloody" path toward a negotiated regional settlement.
