Kurdistan Region to Continue Wheat Procurement Until Iraq’s 400,000-Ton Quota Is Met
The Kurdistan Region Ministry of Trade and Industry has confirmed that wheat procurement from farmers will continue until the full quantity allocated by the Iraqi Government is reached, while emphasizing that regional storage facilities can accommodate up to one million tons of wheat.
Wheat Procurement to Continue Until the Full Quota Is Reached
On Monday, Nawzad Sheikh Kamil, the Director General of Commerce for the Kurdistan Region, announced that wheat procurement from local farmers has been underway for the past week.
Kamil stated, “The process will continue until the official quota allocated to the Region by the Iraqi Government, which stands at 400,000 tons, is fully completed. If the quota is not reached within the designated timeframe, we will request an extension of the procurement period.”
14,000 Tons Procured During the First Week
Kamil added that 14,000 tons of wheat were procured from farmers during the past week. The distribution across the Kurdistan Region’s provinces was as follows:
- Sulaymaniyah and Halabja Governorates: 3,840 tons procured
- Erbil Governorate: 4,504 tons procured
- Duhok Governorate: 5,818 tons procured
Kurdistan Region Storage Capacity Reaches One Million Tons
He further explained that the Kurdistan Region’s total wheat storage infrastructure, including silos, open-air bunkers, and integrated storage warehouses, has the capacity to store up to one million tons of wheat.
