Penjwen District has significant tourism potential due to its striking natural landscapes and rare purple flowers. However, a lack of basic services and limited attention from relevant authorities has resulted in low tourist turnout in the area.

Penjwen’s Nature and Job Opportunities

Penjwen is known as the “Land of the Purple Flowers,” referring to a rare floral variety that covers large parts of the district during the spring season.

This natural environment could become an important source of income for local residents through the development of rest areas and the provision of services such as tea stalls and refreshments. However, these opportunities have not yet been properly utilized.

Lack of Infrastructure in Tourist Areas

Despite having dozens of scenic locations, Penjwen’s tourism infrastructure remains at a very low level.

Roads leading to tourist destinations are in poor condition, and even in popular sites such as the Gole resort, basic services, including restrooms, dining facilities, and accommodation, are completely unavailable. As a result, tourists are often forced to leave shortly after arriving.

Criticism of the Tourism Directorate

Administratively, Penjwen’s tourist sites fall under the responsibility of the Sulaymaniyah Tourism Directorate, which has faced local criticism for not allocating any budget toward marketing or promoting the district.

Due to the lack of promotion, fewer than 100 people have visited some of these unique sites, leaving potential investors without sufficient information about the area’s economic viability.

The Municipality’s Stance and Challenges

The Penjwen Municipality stresses that the district offers a highly favorable environment for investment, stating that any tourism project implemented in the area is expected to generate substantial profits.

According to municipal officials, one of the main challenges is the absence of an independent local tourism directorate in the district to manage operations and systematically develop the sector.
