Iraqi security forces carried out a joint operation in Baghdad targeting narcotics networks, resulting in the arrest of multiple suspects and the seizure of illegal substances.

Joint Operation Leads to Mass Arrests

The Directorate of the Iraqi National Intelligence Service (NIS) announced that the operation was conducted in coordination with Baghdad Operations Command and specialized security units.

During the operation, tactical checkpoints were established across several neighborhoods to intercept suspects. The coordinated raids disrupted movement and resulted in the arrest of 12 high-level drug traffickers.

Seizure of Narcotics and Transfer to Judicial Authorities

NIS seized various quantities of narcotics prepared for local distribution.

Officers also confiscated smuggling-related equipment at the targeted locations. Authorities transferred all 12 detainees, along with the seized evidence, to the judiciary to complete legal procedures.

Death and Life Sentences Issued Against Hundreds of Traffickers

The operation comes amid an intensified legal campaign by the Iraqi state against drug trafficking.

Abbas al-Bahadli, spokesperson for the General Directorate for Combating Narcotics, revealed sentencing figures showing that since 2023, Iraqi courts have issued death sentences against 362 drug kingpins and handed life imprisonment terms to 1,500 others.
