Al-Araji: Limiting Weapons to State Sovereignty is ‘a Purely Iraqi Decision’
Qasim al-Araji, the Iraqi National Security Advisor, stated that restricting weapons exclusively to the state is “a purely Iraqi decision,” emphasizing that the agreement between Washington and Tehran boosts security and economic stability in the region.
Al-Araji met with the Australian Ambassador to Baghdad, Glenn Miles, on Wednesday to discuss strengthening bilateral relations, enhancing cooperation, and reviewing regional and international developments. This meeting focused on sustaining partnership opportunities between the two nations.
Ambassador Miles affirmed Australia’s commitment “to developing relations with Iraq to serve mutual interests, noting his government's support for peace and stability efforts in the region.”
Weapons Disarmament Plan Essential for Development
Regarding the Iraqi government's recent initiatives following its new cabinet formation to restrict weapon ownership, the National Security Advisor underlined that the country “is moving forward with the project to restrict weapon ownership exclusively to the state.”
“This is a purely Iraqi decision aimed at supporting construction and development efforts,” he added
US-Iran Agreement a Major Step for Regional Security
Al-Araji stressed that “supporting the ceasefire resolution and the agreement between the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran represents a significant step in the interest of the countries of the region and the world.”
He noted the agreement’s role in bolstering security, economic stability, and sustainable development, adding that “peace is the best option and that conflicts and wars reflect negatively on the security of the region and its peoples.”
Al-Araji highlighted the importance of respecting international law and adhering to UN and Security Council resolutions to manage crises and resolve conflicts.
“Iraq represents a part of its Arab surroundings, and its relations with various nations are based on mutual interests and balanced cooperation, contributing to the formation of an integrated regional framework, particularly in the security and economic fields,” he added.
