In Six Months, 30 Tourists Drown in Dams and Rivers
The Kurdistan Region Civil Defense has warned of rising water levels in rivers and streams, urging tourists to avoid swimming due to freezing temperatures and strong currents that make conditions highly dangerous.
Rising Drowning Rates
Sarkawt Karash, spokesperson for the Kurdistan Region Civil Defense, told Channel8 that 30 tourists have drowned in dams and rivers over the past six months.
He noted that some of the victims were strong swimmers, but the waters are extremely cold and fast, while the natural terrain of the rivers includes sudden and deep drops that prevent people from exiting safely.
Age Groups of Victims
Karash added that 98% of those who drowned were between the ages of 15 and 25.
He also stated that warning signs in Kurdish, Arabic, and English have been placed across all tourist areas, urging people not to swim.
He further explained that swimming has become especially dangerous this year due to increased water levels in dams.
Safety Conditions for Business Operators
Sarkawt Karash also said that all tourist site operators and commercial boat owners are required to be certified swimmers.
He noted that 130 people were rescued from drowning during the same six-month period.
He emphasized that boarding tourist boats without wearing life jackets is strictly prohibited, adding that avoiding swimming and staying away from rivers is the key to preventing further tragedies.
