Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei said a memorandum of understanding has been signed between the presidents of Iran and the United States, describing the development as the result of extended diplomatic negotiations involving senior officials on both sides.

In a written statement addressed to the Iranian public, Khamenei said: “As you have been informed, a memorandum of understanding was signed between the presidents of Iran and the United States of America.”

He added that the process leading to the agreement involved what he described as “extensive efforts” by officials tasked with the negotiations. “In the course of reaching this stage, the officials in charge, out of sincere concern and goodwill, made extensive efforts,” he said.

Reference to US Pressure During Negotiations

Khamenei also referred to the role of the United States in the negotiations, stating that the American side used significant leverage.

“It was the American president who, out of desperation, used all kinds of leverage to bring this about,” he said.

Approval Conditioned on Internal Assurances

The Supreme Leader stated that he initially held a different position regarding the agreement but ultimately approved it following assurances provided by Iran’s leadership.

“I, as a matter of principle, held a different view,” he said, “however, out of the commitment that the esteemed president, as the head of the Supreme National Security Council, gave to me on his own behalf and on behalf of the other members regarding the safeguarding of the rights of the Iranian nation and the Resistance Front, and his explicit acceptance of that responsibility, I granted my permission.”

He added that Iranian officials involved in the process had committed not to accept what he described as excessive external demands.

“He also explicitly stated that if the American side seeks to make excessive demands, they will not submit to them,” Khamenei said.

Commitment to National Interests

Khamenei emphasized that the agreement is conditional on safeguarding Iran’s interests and regional positions.

From this point forward, he said: “We, that is, you, the proud nation, and this humble servant, will await the realization of the aforementioned conditions.”

No Further Details on Agreement Released

The statement did not provide additional information on the contents of the memorandum of understanding, nor did it outline a timeline for implementation or verification of the stated conditions.

It also did not specify the exact nature of the obligations or mechanisms agreed between Tehran and Washington.

Context and Political Sensitivity

The announcement comes amid ongoing regional tensions and broader international scrutiny of Iran-US relations. The statement framed the agreement as conditional on guarantees relating to national rights and what Khamenei referred to as the “Resistance Front.”
