Iran Announces Closure of Strait of Hormuz
Iran's central military command announced on Saturday that the Strait of Hormuz would be closed to vessel traffic, citing recent Israeli attacks in southern Lebanon and accusing its adversaries of violating previous understandings reached with the United States.
In a statement carried by Iranian state television, the Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters said the measure was being taken in response to what it described as a breach of commitments by the opposing side.
"It is hereby announced that the Strait of Hormuz will be closed to vessel traffic," the statement said.
The military command added that the decision represented an initial response and warned that additional measures could follow if hostilities continue.
"This first step is a response to the enemy's breach of promise, and if the aggression continues, further steps will be planned and taken to force the enemy to comply with its obligations," the statement said.
Iran Links Move to Israeli Attacks
Iranian authorities said the decision was prompted by Israeli military actions in southern Lebanon, which Tehran described as a violation of understandings previously reached with Washington.
Iran did not provide further details regarding the nature of the alleged agreement or the specific commitments it believes were breached.
Israeli officials had not immediately commented on the Iranian statement.
Strategic Importance of the Strait
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most important maritime chokepoints, connecting the Persian Gulf to international waters and serving as a major route for global oil and liquefied natural gas exports.
Any disruption to shipping through the waterway has the potential to affect international energy markets and regional trade flows.
Iran has previously threatened to close the strait during periods of heightened regional tensions, though such moves have often drawn concern from global powers and energy-importing nations.
Regional Tensions Remain Elevated
The announcement comes amid heightened tensions across the Middle East, including ongoing hostilities involving Israel and armed groups allied with Iran in the region.
Analysts note that any sustained disruption to shipping in the Strait of Hormuz could have significant economic and geopolitical consequences, given the waterway's importance to global energy supplies.
There was no immediate international response to the Iranian announcement, and it remained unclear how the closure would be implemented or how long any restrictions on maritime traffic might remain in place.
