As part of an anti-corruption campaign in Iraq, authorities have arrested Iraqi Airways Director General Manaf Abdel-Monem over allegations involving the embezzlement of more than 100 billion Iraqi dinars.

Arrest and Details of the Allegations

Alaa al-Haidari, a member of the Iraqi Council of Representatives, announced that Iraqi Airways Director General Manaf Abdel-Monem has been taken into custody.

According to available information, Abdel-Monem is accused of embezzling 115 billion Iraqi dinars (approximately $87.5 million).

In addition to serving as Director General, Abdel-Monem is an engineer who directly supervised the Ministry of Transportation’s project to rehabilitate and return out-of-service aircraft to operation.

Part of Iraq’s Wider Anti-Corruption Campaign

The arrest comes within the framework of anti-corruption measures launched by Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi to protect public funds.

This broader judicial campaign began on May 30 with the arrest of Adnan al-Jumaili, former Deputy of the Ministry of Oil and Director of the North Refineries Company.

Al-Jumaili was detained in the al-Ishaqi district of Salah al-Din Governorate over allegations related to financial and administrative corruption connected to the Baiji refinery.

Investigations Expand to Additional Cases

The judicial campaign has since extended beyond the aviation sector.

Following formal confessions attributed to the detained Adnan al-Jumaili, a specialized force from the Commission of Integrity arrested Raed al-Jubouri, former Governor of Salah al-Din.

Investigations and interrogations involving senior officials remain ongoing to identify and pursue all individuals implicated in the misuse of public funds.
