U.S. Airstrike in Syria Kills Senior ISIS Leader, CENTCOM Says
U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said Wednesday that its forces carried out a precision airstrike in northwestern Syria that killed a senior Islamic State leader as part of ongoing operations against the militant group.
The June 19 strike killed Ali Husayn al-'Ulaywi, whom CENTCOM described as a senior ISIS leader involved in the organization's operations.
According to the U.S. military, the operation was conducted to disrupt and eliminate militants seeking to carry out attacks against Americans overseas and the U.S. homeland.
Counterterrorism Operations Continue
CENTCOM said its forces continue to work alongside regional partners to target remaining ISIS elements and prevent the group's resurgence in Syria and the wider region.
"CENTCOM and our partners remain committed to rooting out remaining remnants of ISIS to ensure its enduring defeat," CENTCOM Commander Adm. Brad Cooper said in a statement.
"We will continue to defend the U.S. homeland, our service members, and allies and partners across the region," he added.
Ongoing Campaign Against ISIS
The latest strike underscores the continued U.S. military campaign against ISIS remnants in Syria, where American forces have maintained counterterrorism operations in coordination with partner forces despite the group's territorial defeat.
U.S. officials have repeatedly warned that ISIS continues to retain networks and operational capabilities in parts of Syria and Iraq, posing an ongoing security threat to the region and beyond.
CENTCOM did not provide additional details regarding the operation or whether any civilian casualties had been assessed.
