The Ashura commemoration was held at the Imam al-Hakeem Husseiniya in Sulaymaniyah, drawing participants from various social segments, religious backgrounds, and sects alongside traditional food distributions to local mourners.

Marking the tenth day of Muharram—the first month of the Islamic calendar—Ashura is observed by millions globally to commemorate the 7th-century martyrdom of Imam Hussein.

Ashura rituals took place in the city on Friday, with services organized at the al-Hakeem Husseiniya featuring the preparation and distribution of traditional charity meals—including Harisa, a traditional wheat and meat porridge—to mourners and local Shia citizens.

Husseiniya’s Khateeb Notes Interfaith Attendance

Sheikh Hussein Khoshnaw, the Khateeb of the Husseiniya, told Channel8 that extensive events had been organized over the past ten days to mark the occasion.

He noted that the commemorations drew diverse social segments and followers of various sects and religions, including Sunni Muslims, featuring Quranic recitations and historical reflections on the events of Karbala and the martyrdom of Imam Hussein.

Khoshnaw also expressed his gratitude to the local security forces for ensuring the safety and security of the citizens.

Religious Stance on Ashura Mourning

Regarding Ashura mourning methods and self-flagellation, Khoshnaw stated that religious authorities (the Marjaiya) in both Iraq and Iran view certain practices as external traditions introduced to the sect over time.

According to him, minor symbolic chest-beating is permissible, but drawing blood and striking oneself with chains are deemed “inappropriate” within the doctrine.

Husseiniya Charity Kitchen Outlines Meal Schedule

Speaking to Channel8, the kitchen supervisor at the Husseiniya said that charity meals are prepared daily from the first to the tenth of Muharram across the Kurdistan Region.

Production peaks on the tenth day to mark the anniversary of the martyrdom, making today the final day of food preparation at the site.

“While the commemorations will continue in the coming days, the cooking and distribution of food are limited to these ten days. Popular dishes include rice with Qeema [minced meat stew] and Harisa [a traditional wheat and meat porridge]. On the 13th of Muharram, which marks the burial of the martyrs, we will prepare Harisa for the public to take home,” he added.
