KRG Completes Strategic Khor Mor Pipeline Hookup to Boost Sulaymaniyah Power
The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) announced the completion of an 'important strategic project' aimed at increasing overall electricity production at the Sulaymaniyah power plant.
The Ministry of Electricity notified citizens that the Sulaymaniyah Gas Power Generation Station would undergo a six-hour shutdown starting at 2:00 a.m. on Friday to connect a new gas pipeline from the Khor Mor field—an infrastructure upgrade set to boost future production despite triggering temporary local power disruptions.
KRG Completes Six-Hour Khor Mor Pipeline Connection
In a joint statement, the Kurdistan Region's Ministry of Natural Resources and Ministry of Electricity announced that their technical teams—collaborating with KAR Group and Dana Gas—successfully connected the new Khor Mor field gas pipeline to the Sulaymaniyah Gas Power Station within six hours.
According to the ministries, the Ministry of Electricity managed to prevent significant impacts on national power supply schedules by routing power through alternative plants while production at the Sulaymaniyah facility was temporarily halted.
“This project will successfully increase the overall level of electricity production at the Sulaymaniyah power plant,” the ministries affirmed.
The statement added, “We commend the technical teams of both ministries, KAR Group, and Dana Gas for executing this important project.”
Khor Mor Gas Field Powers Kurdistan Energy Strategy
The Khor Mor gas field, operated by Pearl Petroleum in Chamchamal, stands as the largest natural gas repository in the region and fuels over 75% of the Kurdistan Region's electricity generation.
Under the landmark KM250 expansion project, a major increase in gas production has directly enabled the Kurdistan Regional Government's Runaki initiative, which aims to provide 24-hour electricity grid access to millions of citizens.
Despite facing intermittent security disruptions from regional militia drone strikes, the fortified field remains the critical economic anchor for regional power stabilization and energy infrastructure development.
