KRG Partners With UAE's JEC to Expand Solar Power Infrastructure
The Kurdistan Region Ministry of Electricity announced that a meeting was held with the director of the UAE-based Jawda Engineering Consultants (JEC) to discuss plans for establishing several new solar power plants across the Region.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the Ministry of Electricity announced that caretaker Minister Kamal Mohammed Salih received Dr. Amer Ali, Director of the Jawda company to discuss plans for establishing several new 50-megawatt (MW) solar power plants.
The Minister of Electricity expressed the ministry's full readiness to facilitate and support projects aimed at constructing clean energy power plants across the region.
Kurdistan Region Relies Heavily on Natural Gas
The Kurdistan Region currently generates between 4,800 and 5,000 megawatts of electricity, with 134 megawatts produced through solar energy.
The overall generation breakdown consists of 83 percent natural gas, 11 percent black oil, five percent diesel, and one percent hydropower.
KRG Eyes Green Expansion to Meet Runaki Project
The Kurdistan Region is requiring a boost to its current 4,800 to 5,000 megawatt capacity to achieve its goal of providing 24-hour electricity through the Runaki project.
Because 99 percent of its current energy grid relies on burning fossil fuels, the government is aggressively pursuing a green energy diversification strategy.
Partnering with specialized UAE firms like Jawda Engineering Consultants allows the region to expand its minimal 134-megawatt solar infrastructure using private foreign investment.
