Iraq Signs Data Deal with Chevron for West Qurna 2
The Iraqi Ministry of Oil announced that the Basra Oil Company (BOC) signed a confidentiality agreement with U.S. energy firm Chevron on Wednesday to regulate data sharing for evaluating the giant West Qurna 2 oil field, noting that it is currently in talks with the firm to execute several other energy projects alongside the field.
The ministry stated that the Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA), signed under the auspices of Oil Minister Bassim Mohammed Khudair al-Abadi, paves the way for future partnership talks.
Al-Abadi stated that West Qurna 2 is one of the country's giant oil fields, noting that Russia's Lukoil had previously pulled out from its development operations.
He highlighted that lucrative investment opportunities are available to international firms like Chevron, reiterating the ministry's dedication to cutting administrative red tape to ensure a secure and inviting business climate.
Support for International Firms and Local Development
Al-Abadi emphasized that Iraq is ambitious to be at the forefront of global oil production and exports, while emphasizing a strong dedication to safeguarding the commercial interests of international firms operating within the country.
The ministry reaffirmed its support for international corporations as vital energy partners, pledging full logistical backing to ensure their operational success.
It further underlined that these energy investments will secure business contracts for local firms, create jobs for the local workforce, and upgrade public services and infrastructure in areas near the oil fields through social benefit funding.
Transition of Iraq’s West Qurna 2 Oil Field
Developed under a 25-year service contract signed in January 2010, the West Qurna 2 oil field stands as one of the world's largest energy resources.
Following the imposition of United States sanctions on Russia's Lukoil, the U.S. State Department endorsed plans to transfer the firm's operational stake to an American company.
Consequently, the Iraqi government finalized a series of agreements this year to facilitate the management transfer of the massive field to U.S.-based Chevron.
This framework grants Chevron exclusive negotiation rights while state-run oil companies expand parallel infrastructure across the region.
