Talabani Meets Turkish Intel Chief Kalin in Sulaymaniyah, Reaffirming PUK Support for Peace Process
Bafel Jalal Talabani, President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), met with Ibrahim Kalin, head of the Turkish National Intelligence Organization (MİT), stressing the party’s commitment to the ongoing peace process to achieve peaceful coexistence.
The meeting was held in Dabashan, Sulaymaniyah, on Wednesday. Qubad Talabani, a member of the PUK Political Bureau and head of the Mam Jalal Secretariat Bureau, was also in attendance.
During the meeting, the latest developments and changes were discussed, and maintaining the stability of the region was deemed important,' the Talabani Press Office said in a statement.
Talabani Pledges PUK Backing for Peace Process
Talabani reaffirmed the PUK's support for the success of the peace process, describing it as “a historic step.”
He noted that, 'We continue our efforts following the path of President Mam Jalal so that this important and fateful step succeeds, with the aim of promoting coexistence and achieving a comprehensive peace that serves the interest, security, and tranquility of the entire Middle East.”
Additionally, both parties highlighted the need to develop mutual relations within the framework of protecting supreme interests.
From Disarmament to Democratic Integration
Initiated in late 2024, the historic peace process advanced significantly following a disarmament declaration by imprisoned PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan in early 2025, paving the way for the group to officially announce the end of its armed struggle.
This ongoing initiative now utilizes structured legislative frameworks—driven by a parliamentary committee—to draft legal mechanisms for democratic integration.
The PUK maintained a supportive stance toward the process, positioning itself as a key regional mediator to promote dialogue, disarmament, and long-term peaceful coexistence.
