AK Party MP Ensarioglu Confirms Legal Framework for Peace Process on Track Despite Minor Delays
Galip Ensarioglu, MP of the Justice and Development Party (AK Party), stated that under the guidance of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, plans are in place to pass a law regarding the peace process before the parliamentary recess, affirming that there are “no issues” in the process.
Speaking to Channel8, Ensarioglu stated that the peace process is "progressing as planned," noting that under the guidance of the President, legal arrangements are being made and parliament has resolved to work on them.
The Turkish government is currently drafting a legal framework to solidify a renewed peace initiative. Ongoing since late 2024, the process has advanced through multiple critical stages, including parliamentary committee oversight, verified PKK disarmament, and the withdrawal of its members from Turkey.
The upcoming draft law aims to provide formal guidelines to manage political dialogue and accelerate the disarmament process.
Ensarioglu Stresses Bilateral Commitment, Downplays Risks
He emphasized that while potential obstacles could arise, any slight delays extending into September would not pose an issue, as the legal framework and arrangements will still be successfully established.
Ensarioglu cautioned against assuming the process would be entirely seamless, adding that a minimal delay into September remains a slight possibility but would not disrupt the ultimate establishment of the legal framework.
The lawmaker pointed out that the process is bilateral, requiring the PKK to match the steps taken by the state.
Ensarioglu Confirms No ‘Negative Indicators’ From Key Stakeholders
Regarding the criticism toward the process, Ensarioglu said, "There are no issues or negative developments in the process; do not pay attention to what is being discussed outside of it."
He explained that while some political factions are attempting to obstruct the process to appeal to their base or deflect blame onto the government, there are currently no “negative indicators” from the primary stakeholders, including the People's Alliance, the DEM Party, Abdullah Ocalan, or Qandil.
“There are some statements from Qandil and the DEM Party regarding the release of Ocalan, but those are statements within a political context,” he added.
