President of the Kurdistan Region Nechirvan Barzani arrived in Tehran on Friday, following an official invitation from Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.

The Kurdistan Region Presidency announced in a statement that the purpose of the visit is to attend the funeral of Iran's late Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Barzani is also scheduled to hold meetings and discussions with several leaders and high-ranking officials of the country.

Iran Begins Delayed Week-Long State Funeral

Joint U.S. and Israeli airstrikes in Tehran killed Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on February 28, targeting high-ranking Iranian leadership following the collapse of nuclear talks between the sides.

Although his death occurred in February, the funeral was delayed for over four months due to the ongoing regional war, active military operations, and a subsequent 40-day national mourning period.

The week-long state funeral for the late Supreme has begun in Tehran, drawing millions of mourners and global dignitaries before the procession moves to Qom, Iraq, and his final burial in Mashhad.

Kurdistan Region Maintains Strict Neutrality

Throughout the course of the conflict involving the U.S., Israel, and Iran, the Kurdistan Region, which is neighboring Iran, has firmly maintained a position of strict neutrality, stating that it is not a party to the conflict and calling for diplomatic, peaceful solutions rather than a military approach.
