President Amedi Affirms Strategic Non-Alignment Policy in U.S.-Iran Geopolitical Conflict
Iraqi President Nizar Amedi announced on Saturday that the federal government will initiate a comprehensive campaign to bring all weapons held by armed groups under strict state control following the resolution of high-profile corruption cases.
Speaking in an interview with Al Arabiya television, President Amedi described the disarmament process as an irreversible decision and the single most critical security file for the current executive authority.
The president also outlined a strategy to finalize outstanding security agreements with Turkey and addressed regional diplomatic tensions, asserting that Iraq will maintain strict neutrality in the ongoing geopolitical rivalry between Washington and Tehran.
Border Control and Diplomatic Outreach to Iran
The Iraqi government has officially communicated its security expectations to neighboring Iran regarding ongoing border friction and the activities of cross-border armed factions.
According to President Amedi, Baghdad has dispatched a formal message to Tehran detailing the following requirements:
- The initiation of direct bilateral negotiations regarding international border demarcation.
- Strict respect for Iraqi state sovereignty and territorial integrity.
- The cessation of unauthorized activities by external armed groups operating within Iraqi territory.
Domestic Stability and Regional Interdependence
President Amedi acknowledged that despite recent security gains, Iraq's internal domestic security situation remains fragile and unstable. He emphasized that resolving internal militancy is essential not only for domestic stability but also for the broader geopolitical alignment of the Middle East.
The president stated that the national security of Iraq is intrinsically linked to the stability of the Gulf States and the wider region, noting that the security architectures of these neighboring nations complement one another.
Non-Alignment Policy in U.S.-Iran Relations
Addressing Iraq's complex foreign policy positioning, President Amedi reiterated that Baghdad refuses to be drawn into proxy conflicts. He explicitly stated that Iraq will not side with Iran against the United States, nor will it support Washington in any strategic maneuvers against Iran.
The executive authority intends to leverage this neutral stance to finalize the domestic security file, stabilize the economy, and secure its northern borders through a comprehensive settlement with Turkey.
