U.S. President Donald Trump is set to meet separately with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa on Wednesday on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Turkey, as discussions focus on the war in Ukraine and broader regional developments in the Middle East.

White House Confirms High-Level Meetings

The White House announced that Trump will hold bilateral meetings with Zelenskyy and al-Sharaa during the NATO summit in Ankara. White House spokesperson Anna Kelly also confirmed that Trump is scheduled to meet Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on Tuesday before concluding the summit with a press conference on Wednesday.

Ukraine War Expected to Top Agenda

Trump's meeting with Zelenskyy comes as the war between Russia and Ukraine enters its fifth year. The talks follow separate phone conversations Trump held with both Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday, during which the two leaders congratulated him on the United States' Independence Day celebrations marking the country's 250th anniversary.

Following his call with Trump, Zelenskyy said they discussed developments on the battlefield, where Russian advances have reportedly slowed while Ukraine has expanded its long-range strikes inside Russian territory.

The Ukrainian president said there is a real opportunity to bring the conflict to an end and indicated that discussions on achieving peace would continue during the NATO summit.

According to Kremlin foreign affairs adviser Yuri Ushakov, Putin and Trump also discussed the conflict, with Trump reaffirming his willingness to help achieve a rapid end to hostilities and pursue a peaceful resolution.

A senior U.S. official said Trump considers ending the war an urgent priority and plans to discuss possible pathways to peace with Zelenskyy before following up with Putin after the summit meetings.

Trump Also Scheduled to Meet Syria's President

Trump is also expected to hold talks with Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa, although U.S. officials have not disclosed the agenda for the meeting.

The meeting comes after Trump publicly suggested that Syria should confront Hezbollah as fighting involving Israel and the Lebanese group has complicated wider regional negotiations related to Iran.

Al-Sharaa has rejected that idea, stating that Syria has no intention of engaging in conflict with Hezbollah. He has also said Trump's remarks were misunderstood, despite the U.S. president repeating the proposal on multiple occasions.
