Talabani Praises Departing German Envoy's Role, Reaffirms Commitment to Future Relations
Bafel Jalal Talabani, President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), met with Albrecht von Wittke, Germany's Consul General to the Kurdistan Region, to discuss bilateral relations and acknowledge the diplomat's tenure in the Region.
Talabani received Wittke in Debashan, Sulaymaniyah, on Monday in a meeting attended by Political Bureau member Darbaz Kosrat Rasul.
Talabani Thanks Departing Envoy, Stresses Future Ties and Stability
As his mission came to an end, Talabani “expressed his gratitude and appreciation for his impactful role in the Kurdistan Region, wishing him success in his future duties.”
Regarding the political situation in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq, both parties “emphasized joint work among all parties to resolve issues and preserve regional stability.”
Talabani and Wittke also emphasized the importance of relations between Iraq and the Kurdistan Region with Germany, underscoring a mutual commitment to further developing them.
Germany’s Multifaceted Role: From Military Support to Economic Aid
Germany has been a vital security partner since the 2014 fight against ISIS, providing weaponry and training to modernize the Kurdish Peshmerga forces.
As a major international donor, Germany actively supports the Kurdistan Region through economic diversification projects, infrastructure development, and humanitarian aid.
Operating a Consulate General in Erbil since 2009, Germany maintains close, direct ties with Kurdish leadership to manage regional stability and shared diaspora migration issues.
