PUK Bloc Says Ongoing Corruption Probes Yet to Identify All Suspects as More MPs Face Immunity Strips
Dilan Ghafoor, spokesperson for the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) bloc in the Iraqi Council of Representatives, stated that ongoing investigations have not yet been finalized to identify suspects or determine the exact scale of the corruption involved, amid reports indicating that more members of parliament will face similar actions in the near future.
During “Operation Dawn Strike,” launched on June 28, security forces arrested 21 officials and MPs based on confessions from Deputy Oil Minister Adnan al-Jumaili, while pursuing 26 fugitives, including three lawmakers.
Amid a sweeping anti-corruption crackdown, the parliament has lifted the parliamentary immunity of multiple lawmakers.
Ghafoor: Lifting Parliamentary Immunity a 'Purely Legal Process'
Speaking to Channel8, Dilan Ghafoor said that lifting parliamentary immunity is a “purely legal process” within the authorized jurisdiction of the parliament.
Ghafoor noted that the parliament was the first entity to back the initiative, confirming that immunity has already been lifted for nine MPs.
Iraqi Lawmakers Demand Crackdown Focus on Top Officials
While several Iraqi lawmakers revealed that more MPs will lose their immunity in the coming period, the Council of Representatives denied claims that the legal actions against corruption suspects are politically motivated purges.
According to media reports, the second phase of “Operation Dawn Strike” is expected to implicate a new wave of suspects in major corruption cases. Concurrently, lawmakers demand that the anti-corruption campaign target high-profile figures rather than focusing solely on low-level officials.
Meanwhile, parliament's Secretary-General, Safwan al-Gargari, stated they have not received official written notification regarding the exact number of arrested or stripped lawmakers.
