A senior delegation from the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) met with Iraqi National Security Advisor Qasim al-Aboudi in Baghdad on Monday to boost federal-regional security cooperation and reinforce the joint border security pact with Iran.

The delegation, led by Minister of Interior Reber Ahmed, reviewed the overall security situation in the country with the Iraqi officials.

The officials addressed several security files of mutual concern, focusing “on strengthening security cooperation and coordination between the federal government and the regional government.”

Coordination to Enforce Iraq-Iran Border Security Pact

Iraq and Iran signed a joint security agreement in Baghdad on March 19, 2023, to secure their shared borders.

Meanwhile, the Kurdistan Regional Government has consistently demonstrated its commitment to upholding the terms of the pact.

Regarding the pact, both sides focused on the mechanisms required to implement the joint security agreement between Iraq and Iran.

The KRG and Iraqi team “reaffirmed the commitment of all parties to the terms of the agreement to protect the shared borders and to prevent any violations that could affect the security of the region.”

KRG and Iraqi Army Move to Fill Security Gaps

In a separate meeting today, Reber Ahmed met with the Iraqi Army Chief of Staff, First Lieutenant General Abdul Amir Rashid Yarallah.

The officials reviewed the country's security situation and agreed to strengthen field cooperation between federal and Peshmerga forces to fill security gaps along the borders.

Both parties also emphasized expanding joint operations and intelligence sharing to combat organized crime, hunt down terror remnants, and protect national stability.
