Khamenei’s Body Arrives in Iraq as Historic Religious Centers Prepare for Scheduled Processions
The body of former Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei is scheduled to arrive at Najaf International Airport on Tuesday, marking the commencement of two days of official and public funeral processions across Iraq's historic shrines and revered religious centers.
A formal reception attended by senior Iraqi and international officials will take place at the airport on Tuesday evening to initiate the state-sanctioned mourning ceremonies.
Najaf Procession Schedule and Route
A large-scale public procession is organized for Wednesday morning in Najaf, spanning a total distance of six kilometers through the city's main thoroughfares. Local authorities have finalized the formal route to manage the expected crowds and ensure security along the perimeter.
The designated procession route in Najaf will proceed as follows:
- 06:00 AM: Departure from the Al-Sadr Hospital Bridge.
- Movement: Progression through Al-Sadrayn Square toward the July 14th (20th Revolution) Bridge.
- Termination: Arrival at Al-Maydan Square within the Old City, concluding with the transfer of the body to the Holy Shrine of Imam Ali.
Karbala Procession Schedule and Route
Following the conclusion of the ceremonies in Najaf, the funeral procession will transfer to the city of Karbala on Wednesday afternoon. The final leg of the Iraqi ceremonies will cover a distance of 5.8 kilometers before the formal conclusion of the state program.
The designated procession route in Karbala will proceed as follows:
- 04:00 PM: Commencement on Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis Street.
- Movement: Transition through the Sayyid Jouda Intersection, along the Governorate Road, and past the Court Intersection.
- Termination: Concluding entry into the Holy Shrines of Imam Hussain and Imam Abbas.
