Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu cautioned on Tuesday that a potential U.S. sale of F-35 stealth fighter jets to Turkey would destabilize the Middle East.

His comments followed U.S. President Donald Trump’s statement earlier in the day that he was weighing the move, despite Washington’s 2019 decision to expel Ankara from the F-35 program after Turkey acquired a Russian air defense system.

“It would destroy the power balance in the Middle East, because Turkey, I think, has aggressive aspirations,” Netanyahu told CNN in a televised interview. “When you give them that power, you’re going to see aggression in its wake.”

Turkey has long sought reentry into the F-35 program and the lifting of U.S. sanctions that have strained bilateral ties and hindered Turkish defense projects. While Netanyahu has consistently opposed the sale, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is relying on his rapport with Trump to push for the delivery of five jets, which Ankara has already paid for.
